We have annual dog days cicadas which start to appear the end of July. The periodic cicadas only appear in 17 year cycles. This is the second time we saw them emerge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cicada1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-150\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cicada1.jpg\" alt=\"cicada1\" width=\"450\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cicada1.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/cicada1-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They emerge from their homes in the soil at night and start to climb. After latching on a surface the cicada&#8217;s shell splits along the back and the adult climbs out.
