I carried leaves over to the garden to cover the paths and beds. I carried leaves over to the compost pile in the garden. There are two large piles of leaves on the edge of the yard and finally I resorted to the mower to chop up the leaves and blow them away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"343\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/wintergreen-nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-488\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/wintergreen-nov.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/wintergreen-nov-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nis a patch of wintergreen that grows in the northeast corner of our house where\nthe house and addition meet and is shaded from sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"349\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-ferns-nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-489\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-ferns-nov.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/christmas-ferns-nov-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Except\nfor a few plants, like wintergreen, almost all ground vegetation is bare of\nleaves. Christmas ferns are a hardy exception. Even in a cold and snowy winter\nthere will be green leaves visible in early January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"348\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/beeches-nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-490\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/beeches-nov.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/beeches-nov-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most trees lose their dead leaves; beeches are an exception. These are young beeches down in the hollow to the west of our home. A deep gully is between these trees and the rocks and hillside opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"256\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/hollow-tree-texture-nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-491\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/hollow-tree-texture-nov.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/hollow-tree-texture-nov-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For\nsome reason textures seem to stand out in autumn and winter. This is the inside\nof a tall stump, the remains of a hollow tree that fell years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"357\" src=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/the-walk-nov.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-492\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/the-walk-nov.jpg 450w, http:\/\/sootypaws.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/the-walk-nov-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Every evening before bringing in the cats there\u2019s the walk. This started with Bobo and Kitty Boy is an eager adherent. The walk is about a half hour sitting with the cats before coming inside for dinner. Bobo loved walking rather than sitting until he got older which is why it\u2019s called the walk. Kitty Boy likes to sit on or near the walker. If other cats are nearby he\u2019ll sometimes perform antics batting and chasing a nut or a branch. In this photo Molly and Kitty Boy are sitting on the shack porch. In autumn, though, the colors are dramatic.
