In some parts of the state there's a Marcellus drilling boom and in this video we interview two people whose domestic drinking water supplies were contaminated. Bonnie Hall lives in Wetzel county, in the northern part of the state, a little over a mile from the well that's contaminated her deep water well. Paul Phillips lives with his mother in Kanawha county, in the southwestern part of the state, near the vertical Marcellus well (47-039-06155) on their property that's contaminated their water well.
There are a number of issues presented in this video that we'll deal with more fully in future videos. Contamination of drinking water supplies, either municipal or domestic, from a number of causes related to natural gas drilling is well documented.
The type of contamination seen in Bonnie's and Paul's wells is derived from crude petroleum forced, under high pressure, into the aquifer.
Unfortunately, the regulatory structure in West Virginia and other states is set up so that while the state may require testing of water supplies, issues that arise are the responsibility of the parties involved -- often a surface owner versus an operator's well-financed legal team.
Bonnie is a member of the Wetzel County Action Group.
