47-109-02703

This is a recently drilled well in Wyoming county for injection. One feature of the facility is three large fluid storage pits. A similar facility in Fayette county, 47-019-00460, originally had 2 large pits. These pits leaked, contaminating soil, groundwater and surface water.

Major issue

  • The large waste fluid storage pits are a possible avenue for ground and surface water contamination.

The facility includes 3 large fluid storage pits. One of the sources of fluid to be injected is coalbed methane wells which include coal fines in their waste. The pits are used for settling out the coal fines. The largest pit, the one furthest right, is where fluid is initially stored. As fines settle fluid is moved to the middle and then the pit to the left. This is a 2013 view.

A UIC well constructed without any cement behind the steel casing strings to protect groundwater.

A commercial UIC well where activity on the site contaminated groundwater.

A commercial UIC well where activity on the site or because of well failure has contaminated surface water.

A UIC well whose use led to earthquakes in the area.
