Well drilled in 1968, converted to use as an injection well in the 1990s
Producing formation, now disposal formation: Newburg
Geographic location: latitude 38.460906, longitude -81.650601

Visited in 2013

This well is a Underground Injection Control class 2 well in a residential area near I-77 north of Charleston. It's a commercial UIC well (can take waste from the wells of other operators) unlike the other UIC class 2 well we looked at in 2013.

We were impressed with what we saw at this site with limitations. There was an awful strong odor and the large tank (57,000 gallon size) doesn't have visible secondary containment. The well has restricted access -- the gate on the access road is always kept locked. The site is well fenced.

More photographs and links to documents is in the UIC documents section.

The UIC well site is next to Old Tupper's Creek Road. The creek itself runs behind the well site.

The gates at both entrances to the site were locked and the site was well fenced.

The 57,000 gallon storage tank stands tall over the site.

In the foreground is the cement unloading area. It appears that metal grates allow spilled fluid to enter a sump.

Besides the tall tank there were two smaller steel tanks set within secondary containment.

The tall tank is barely visible to the left. The unloading pad is in the foreground.
