The Shack was the first building we ever built. It was windowless for years before we finally moved, being primarily used as an indoor camp and storage building.
Originally the Shack was a 12 x 18 foot structure. We added another 8 x 18 feet in winter 1993 to give us extra living space. A year later we added a 4 x 8 closet addition.
The Shack is a combination of building styles. The foundation are cinderblock piers. The walls and ceilings hang from 4 x 4 inch posts that rise from the floor joists and plate above the foundation.
George, Molly and the Lanes dog Chumley are working with the water level for setting up the batter boards. Before laying out the building we cleared an area by hand.
The cinderblock piers are set on foundation blocks and cemented together. This was done several months before the building actually began during a week of summer vacation.
This shows the basic frame of the Shack, the posts rest above the piers. Everything is pretty shaky at this stage so bracing helps keep things upright.
