Off the Grid

We lived from 1991 to 2015 on our West Virginia farm without electricity or running water. It was easier to do than we thought. Beginning about 2008 we had a cellphone and in 2015 we began our solar electric project which provides electricity to our home. Things were hard at times, but that is easily offset by how immediate our lives feel, and our growing attachment to the natural world in the woods around us.

We hope to have some more about the process of living on a non-electric homestead in this area of the site. An idea of what it feels like can be gleaned from the selections in Molly’s Journals.

This section of the site includes:

Living Off the Grid A description of what we do in order to live without electricity and running water.

Making a Living — about making a living as a blacksmith.

Cats is a quick look at some of our cat buddies over the years.

Buildings — Photographs of the Shack, Shop and House we built.

The Mystery Jar — we take a look at the Mystery Jar, is the label or the contents more important?

The Christmas Truck— Molly wrote this story in 2000.
