Gas Well Workshop

Third Session

Videos
There is only one video for this session where we put together the various elements available for a preliminary well assessment. The well in this video is a vertical Marcellus well in Kanawha county about 25 miles from the state capitol.

Besides our own evaluation, we have depended on 3 extensive interviews with the surface owner, testing of a water sample from their water well, aerial photographs provided by SkyTruth, and reports of the operator's activities in Pennsylvania.

Documents
Documents for this session are Making a Complaint and Looking at a Drill Site. We intend to devote a part of the conference call time to discussing how to look at an active drill site.

Exercise for Session Three

Study Documents
We think our 2011 Gas Well Study and Thirty Wells paper provide ideas on how to use information gathered from looking at gas well sites.

We suggest that industry videos which can be seen on YouTube are worth looking at. They obviously tell only part of the story. People in areas where these companies are active may find the videos useful as a comparison to what is actually happening.

Horizontal Well Comments
We believe that operators' abandoned wells and legacy wells in the county and region where they are actively drilling horizontal Marcellus wells can provide basis for commenting on permits.

Online databases are useful for determining types of well activity in county and throughout the state.

State law, 22-6-19, states "Any well which is completed as a dry hole or which is not in use for a period of twelve consecutive months shall be presumed to have been abandoned and shall promptly be plugged by the operator . . ." Some abandoned wells are an environmental hazard. One recently drilled well in our area was considered abandoned by the Office of Oil and Gas because the operator failed to provide production reports, even though the well was producing. A backlog of unplugged abandoned wells can be both worthy of comment and a topic for letters to the editor/articles.
